Obituary

Norman L. Haynes, 86, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away Sunday, October 8 at Hospice House of the Piedmont.

Born in LaGrange, GA, he was a son of the late William Fletcher Haynes and Bessie Roberts Haynes. Mr. Haynes attended Auburn University after completing his service in the US Army. He moved to Greenwood in 1962 with Monsanto, and retired after thirty years of service in 1986. Mr. Haynes was a member and former deacon of Woodfields Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Slaughter Haynes, son, Norman Andrew "Andy" Haynes, and siblings William Haynes and Claudia Haynes Mitchum.

Surviving are his daughter, Ginny Gunnells with husband Barry of Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Deanie Haynes of Dawsonville, GA; grandchildren, Chad Gunnells, Kea Gunnells Blevins (Eric), Chelsea Haynes Hamilton (Adrian), Caroline Haynes, and Lawson Andrew Haynes; great-grandchildren, Eva Cook, Ethan Blevins, and LeElle Haynes; and brother Douglas Murphy of Athens, Georgia.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Louie Murray and Dr. Robert Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Chad Gunnells (Athens, GA), Eric Blevins (Garner, NC), Ethan Blevins (Garner), Larry Kelly (Roswell, GA), Mike Palumbo (Dunwoody, GA), and James Yeldell (Greenwood).

Honorary pallbearers are Rev. Wade Burton (Greenwood), Tom Calloway (Greenwood), Fred Phillips (Greenwood), and Douglas Murphy (Athens, GA).

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the love and care shown to Mr. Haynes by the staff of Hospice House and their dear friends, Louie and Karen Murray.  You were as family to him.  We're also eternally grateful for the compassion and gracious spirit shown by the Doctors, Staff and Volunteers at Hospice Care of the Piedmont, Hospice House.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
