Rev. Paul Calvin Reid, 85, of Greenwood, husband of Mary Amanda Whelchel Reid, died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at HospiceCare of the Piedmont.
Born in Whitney, SC he was the son of the late Arthur Calvin and Ethel Davis Reid. Paul was a U. S. Navy veteran and attended Spartanburg Methodist College, USC-Florence, Beaver Creek Bible Institute and Free Will Baptist Bible College. He was the pastor for many churches including Beaver Dam Free Will Baptist Church in Greer, SC, South Avenue Free Will Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC, Westside Free Will Baptist Church in Johnsonville, SC, Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church in Bratt, FL and also First Free Will Baptist Church in Greenwood, which he organized in 1974. Rev. Reid served as the State Moderator of Free Will Baptist Conference. Paul was a substitute teacher in Johnsonville, a volunteer firefighter in Whitney and Johnsonville and rescue squad volunteer in Johnsonville.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are his son, Paul David Reid and wife, Leilani Guest Reid; grandchildren, Maria Amanda Reid and Hannah Grace Reid, all of Greenwood; one sister, Mary Ardella Gilliland of Spartanburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2pm on Saturday at First Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Damon Duncan, Rev. Bob Woodyard, Rev. Donald Davis and Rev. Chris Todd officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Steve Jackson, Noah Woodyard, Wayne Phillips, Lee Parris, Matthew Woodyard, Bill Hale, and Chuck Nelson.
Honorary escort will be the members of Free Will Baptist Beaver Creek Association, South Carolina Free Will Baptist Ministers and members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of First Free Will Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Saturday before the service from 12 noon to 2 pm. at the church.
