James L. "Pete" Day, 89, of 714 Reedy Creek Road, widower of Mattie Louise Hollingsworth Day, died Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Hospice House.
Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Willie and Grace Day. He was retired from Greenwood Mills and served in the US Coast Guard during World War II on the USCGC Ingham Cutter, earning the honor of wearing the WWII Victory Ribbon. Pete was known as "The Bicycle Man" for his love of tinkering with and working on all kinds of bicycles. He enjoyed visiting yards sales, flea markets, and loved wrestling and attended Trinity Baptist Tabernacle.
Surviving are three sons, James "Smiley" Day, David Day, and Fredrick Day and his sister, Martha Cox, all of Greenwood; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lesley Eugene Day.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Ouzts and the Rev. H. Lawton Neely officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be D. J. Day, Chad Day, Brad Day, Chris Day and Dennis Butler.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m.
