Phyllis Nadine French, 84, of 127 Pin Oak Drive, widow of Herbert W. French, Jr., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Self Regional Medical Center. She was born and reared in Ashland, KY and was a 1945 graduate of Christ Hospital School of Nursing, Cincinnati, OH, where she received her Registered Nursing degree. While in nurses training, she served in the US Army Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II and, in the last six months of her training, was one of three students from throughout the United States to be selected to study with the Henry Street Nursing Settlement in New York City, which was the original Visiting Nurse Association in America. Following graduation, she worked for a year at the Caylor-Nichol Clinic, Bluffton, IN and then returned to Ashland, where she worked with Boyd County Health Department. After her marriage to Mr. French in 1946, they moved to Louisville, KY, where she worked as a visiting nurse for the Louisville and Jefferson County Health Department. In 1952, they moved to Morehead, KY, where she taught nursing at Morehead State College, now Morehead State University, and following their move to Pensacola in 1956, worked as a visiting nurse. The French's moved to Greenwood in 1960 and, in 1968, Mrs. French continued her career as a visiting nurse with the Greenwood County Health Department, retiring in 1982. Mrs. French was a Past President of the Daffodil Garden Club and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Henry Reynolds Sunday School Class, serving as President from 2000-2007. Surviving are her children, Dr. Carol Ann French of Irmo, SC and Herbert Winfield "Chip " French and his wife, Sherry Lark French, of Greenwood; grandchildren, Meredith Lauren French of Charleston, Herbert Winfield "Win " French, IV and Heather Boyter, both of Greenwood.
