Phyllis Snyder McWatty, 92, of 1104 Jefferson Street, widow of Ernest Carlton McWatty, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Hospice House. Born in Harrisburg, PA, she was the fourth of six children of the late Frank Manning Snyder and Yates Jeffers Snyder, who died when Phyllis was only six years old. After her mother's death, her father married Helen Marie Fritz, who lovingly raised these children as her own. Becoming the wife of a career Navy officer in 1943 allowed her the opportunity to live in and visit many exciting places, settling in Greenwood, SC following Cdr. McWatty's retirement in 1959, so that he could attend Lander College. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother but was also very active in the community, as a member of the American Legion Post 20 Auxiliary and a former member of the Greenwood Woman's Club and her garden club. She was recently presented with an award for 40 years of service to the Self Regional Hospital Auxiliary, the longest number of years for an active volunteer. She was a faithful, active member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mason Class, Fellowship Circle of the United Methodist Women and the Main Streeters. Surviving are her children, Robert McWatty (Becky) of Hartsville, Sally M. Sprott (Tommy) of Ninety Six, Jeff McWatty and Jim McWatty, both of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, Carol S. Harley (Ruple III) of Ninety Six, Glenn Sprott (Tammie) of Simpsonville, Beth M. Heim (Jason) of Woodbridge, VA, Leslie M. Wilkes (Jason) of Hartsville, Scott J. McWatty (Amy) of Lexington, Jeremy McWatty and Lindsey M. Lawrence (John), all of Greenwood; 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by all of her sisters, Gertrude Maffett, Yates Deahl, Janet Jewett and Catherine Souilliard and her brother, Frank M. Snyder, Jr.
