Abner Pierce Stockman, Jr., a beloved member of our community and a true pillar of strength, passed away on December 31, 2023, at the age of 87. Pierce was born on October 5, 1936, in Greenwood to the late Abner Pierce Stockman, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Hilton Stockman. He was a man known for his unwavering dedication and contributions that left an indelible mark on those around him.
Pierce's journey in life was defined by his remarkable career as the retired president of Stockman Oil Company and Stockman Lands. With determination and astute leadership, he led the companies to great heights, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. His passion for history led him to pursue a degree in History from Wofford College, graduating in 1958.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Pierce was a man driven by compassion and faith. He was a founding member of CEF - Lakelands (Good News Clubs), an organization dedicated to spreading the Message of Christ's hope and love to children. His commitment to community extended to his role as a board member of The Museum & Railroad Historical Center, where he played an integral part in preserving our rich heritage.
Pierce found great joy in serving others. He served as Board Chair at the Greenwood Methodist Home, overseeing its transformation into a vibrant retirement community. He served as a Boy Scout leader, which was one of the ways he instilled the values of responsibility, integrity, and selflessness in countless young minds.
Pierce's patriotism and love for his country were evident through his membership in the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, holding the esteemed title of National Life Member. He cherished and honored the sacrifices made by his ancestors.
Faith played a significant role in Pierce's life. On March 22, 1950, he experienced a life-changing moment when Billy Graham held a crusade in Greenwood at the Phoenix Street football field. It was there that Pierce gave his life to Christ, forever shaping his moral compass and purpose.
Pierce was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he found solace and community. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, boundless compassion, and enduring love for all.
Pierce's loss leaves an irreplaceable void within our community. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories, wisdom, and guidance he shared.
Pierce is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Counts Stockman; his children, Chip Stockman (Lorraine) and Lori Davis (Stephen), all of Greenwood and Jenny Tonnell (Brian) of Enid, OK; grandchildren, Miranda Manack (John), Amelia Stockman, Jacob Stockman, Hunter Davis, Ellen Harvey (Andrew), Joshua Davis, Andrew Tonnell (Mary) and Jonathan Tonnell; and great grandchildren, Emmett Tonnell, Sadie Tonnell and Knox Manack.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Stockman Cureton.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Keck officiating. Burial will be private.
Pallbearers will be Pierce's grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
Honorary escort will be Charlie Herndon, Linda Willing, Walker Inabinet, Ann Overholt, Ed & Lea McCallum and Bill & Ginny Wilson.
A reception to celebrate Pierce's life will be held on Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the home of Lori and Stephen Davis, 107 Lelia Drive in Maxwell Springs.
