J. Richard Harris, 72, formerly of Greenwood, widower of Beth R. Harris, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017.
Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late Henry Edward "Ed" Harris, Sr and Margie Campbell Harris. Richard was a graduate of Greenwood High School class of 1963. He joined the U. S. Air Force where he served on the 6924th Security Squadron in Danang, Vietnam. When he returned from Vietnam, he started a career in Consumer Finance Business. He was on 16 separate financial boards where he served as president in many of these associations and received numerous awards for his involvement and leadership. He retired after 46 years and 9 months as Vice President from Southern Management Corp. Richard was a member of the American Legion Post # 25 in Laurens and enjoyed attending his Vietnam reunions each year since 2005 where he formed a close relationship with those that served alongside him. He was a member of Cedarwood Community Church where he was a Deacon and on the Church Safety Committee.
Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the annual beach vacations and attending all of his grandchildren's sporting events.
Surviving are his children, Darrin Harris (Angel), Tripp Goff (Janet) both of Greenwood and Deleigh Goff of Tempe, AZ; a brother, Dennis C. Harris (Gladys) of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Chance & Haley Harris, Tanner & Casen Goff, all of Greenwood, Sumher Goff and Gabriel Crawford of Tempe, AZ; and a great granddaughter, Marli Goff of Gallipolis, OH.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Edward Harris, Jr. (Nancy) of Prattville, AL.
Services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clint Carter, Rev. Darrell Rooks, Rev. Ervin Stutzman Doug Churner officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Russell Moore, Bryan Moore, Brandon Moore, Scott Kwarsick, Keith Kwarsick and Kyle Kwarsick.
Honorary escorts will be the those that served alongside him in the 6924th Security Squadron in Danang, Vietnam.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 pm.
