Richard "Dick" Ackroyd Reeves, 95, of Ninety-Six, South Carolina, peacefully left this world better than he found it December 2, 2022 in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Born September 3, 1927, in Evanston, Illinois, to the late Courtney Harold Reeves and Esther Ackroyd Reeves, Dick was loved fiercely by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Frengel Reeves of Ninety-Six, South Carolina, and adored by his six children, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; son, David Courtney Reeves (Becky Nielsen Reeves) of Alamo, CA; and daughters Hollis "Holly" Reeves Wilkes (Richard Wilkes) of Simpsonville, SC; Patricia "Tricia" Reeves Vinci of Lynnfield, MA; Elizabeth "Betsy" Reeves Kenyon (Peter Kenyon) of Frederick, MD; and Katherine "Kate" Reeves White (Jason White) of Charleston, SC; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Courtney and Esther Reeves; daughter, Linda Reeves Pettit; brother, Courtney Harold Reeves, Jr.; granddaughter, Sydney Patricia Vinci; and nephew, Philip Walker Reeves.
After graduating at age 16 from what is now Evanston Township High School, Dick received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. An Army Veteran of World War II, he additionally served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserves.
Dick enjoyed a 42-year career in the paper industry, retiring in 1991 as Vice President and Group Executive from International Paper. He previously served as an executive of The Brown Company, J&J Rogers Company, and Hammermill Paper Company, as well as President of Western Paper Company.
Always leading by example, Dick proudly served the community in every city he called home, including Erie, Pennsylvania; Lake Oswego, Oregon; Isle of Palms, South Carolina; and Ninety Six, South Carolina. He served as a Director of the National Paper Trade Association, Chairman of the Public Broadcasting of Northwestern Pennsylvania, on the Boards of Directors for Rotary Club of Erie and Penn State Behrend, and in various roles at The Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood, The Rotary Club of Greenwood, and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Lake Shore Country Club, and The Kahkwa Club in Erie.
Dick loved the game of golf, having learned at a very young age from his father. While he never did ace a hole, he was very proud of "shooting his age" twice, the last being an 88 at the age of 90.
Until very recently, you could find Dick in his neighborhood of Grand Harbor taking strolls, hitting balls at the driving range, or cycling at the fitness center. Known as "the Mayor of Grand Harbor," he will be dearly missed by his men's Bible study group, his couples' bridge group, and his golf buddies.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 3 p.m. at Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood with Rector Mary Balfour Dunlap presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenwood Pathway House, 310 Panola Ave, Greenwood, SC 29646. Online condolences may be made to
