Obituary

Richard J. Shirey, 89, beloved husband of Joyce Gregg Shirey passed away on February 22, 2024, at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born on September 20, 1934, in Johnstown, PA, he was a son of the late Lester Shirey, Sr. and Matilda Unitz Shirey. Richard dedicated his life to serving his country as a U.S. Army veteran and later pursued a successful career as a mechanic retiring from Delta Airlines. After living in Miami, Florida for 30 years, Richard retired and settled in Greenwood, where he loved spending time on Lake Greenwood and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling, taking numerous cruises. A man of faith, Richard was an active member of Rice Memorial Baptist Church, where he cultivated deep relationships within his church family. His enduring optimism and inner strength were evident to all who knew him, and his kind and warm-hearted nature touched the lives of many.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Shirey, Jr.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his sons: Dwaine Anthony Shirey (Debbie), and Timothy Wade Shirey (Carolyn); six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dale Levan officiating. The family will visit with friends before the service from 2-3 pm.
