Obituary

Robert A. Byrd, 92, formerly of McKenzie Road, Ninety Six and resident of Magnolia Manor, husband of Ruby Whelchel Byrd, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Born in the Limestone/Gilgal community in Edgefield County, he was a son of the late John T. and Johnnie Sue Buzhardt Byrd. He was employed for 25 years by Pierce Young Angel and retired from Warner-Lambert. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a member of South Main Street Baptist Church. He loved hunting and fishing, especially rabbit hunting, was an avid gardener and the recipient of the Gardener of the Year award. He was first married to the late Sara McCool Byrd. Surviving is his wife; nieces, Shirley (Zack) Bush of Saluda and Marian (Ron) Lingenfelter of Johnston; nephew, Charlie (Lela) Jackson of Edgefield; stepdaughters, Vivian (Bob) Whelchel-Woodyard and Joyce (Bill) Whelchel-Hale, both of Greenwood; step grandchildren, Matthew (Tara) Woodyard of Greenwood, Bethany Woodyard of Hilton Head and Noah Woodyard of Greenwood and a step great grandchild, Lyndsey Woodyard. The family is at the home, 111 Chesterfield Court, Apt. 9. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made to Connie Maxwell Children�s Home, PO Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648 or to South Main Street Baptist Church, PO Box 1093, Greenwood, SC 29648.
