James Robert Whitmire, 77, husband of Norma Rains Whitmire, died Monday, September 25, 2017 at Hospice House.

Born in Pickens, he was a son of the late James E. and Irene McJunkin Whitmire. He was a graduate of Greenville High School and received his Associates degree from Piedmont Technical College. He was retired from the SC Department of Corrections in McCormick and served in the US Air Force. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of the home; his son, James Douglas Whitmire (Theresa) of Mobile, AL; his brothers, Roy Whitmire (Linda) of Fountain Inn, Roger Whitmire (Cindy) of Simpsonville, Allen Whitmire (Debra) of Lugoff and Jimmy Whitmire of Greenville; his grandchildren, James David Whitmire (Gina) and Kaitlin Whitmire; and his great granddaughter, Stephanie Jane Whitmire.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Natalie Whitmire.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith of Christ Evangelistic Church, 510 Wingert Road, Greenwood, with the Rev. James Rains officiating.

The family is at the home of Charles and Pat Havird, 622 Locksley Drive, Greenwood.
