Ronald "Ron" Mathews, 78, of Greenwood, SC, husband of Bobbie Jean Manley Mathews, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023 at his home. Born in Los Angeles, CA, he was the son of Lyle Harmon Mathews and Annabelle Leon Moore Mathews. Ron was a veteran of the US Army and served in Korea.
Shortly after his return, he was blessed to be stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA, where fate would have him meet a beautiful telephone operator. Not long into their whirlwind courtship, they realized they were destined to spend the rest of their lives together. Miss Bobbie Jean Manley soon became Mrs. Bobbie Mathews, and was the love of his life.
After receiving an honorable discharge from his time served in the Army, the young couple moved to Ron's hometown of Santa Maria, CA, where they fully expected to live out the remainder of their lives.
Fate had different plans in store for this young couple, and soon Ron went to work for Bechtel. He and Bobbie moved all over the country during his 42 years with the company and have made many lifelong friends along the way.
They decided to make their home in Florida upon his retirement, where they shared 16 wonderful years before making their final move to Greenwood, SC. Ron was a member of Greenwood Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he participated in many different areas of the Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Bobbie Jean Mathews; his son, Scott Lyle Mathews (Kristin); his four Grandchildren: Jessica Ann Mathews, Ryland Scott Mathews, Ryleigh Paige Mathews, and Annagail Patricia Mathews; as well as his loyal, furry companion, Buddy; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends they considered to be family. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; sister, Bobbe Jean Jenkins; and brother, Michael Dail Mathews.
Ron's character was truly one-of-a-kind. He had the charm and ability to glide into a room, and light it up like it's 1999! He loved to cook, and while he "didn't like to brag", every meatloaf, batch of chili, and taco soup he ever made was "quite possibly his best one yet".
He was a trusted colleague for some, to others he was their lifelong friend. He was truly a blessing to his immediate family. He was a dedicated and loving husband to Bobbie. To his son Scott, he was a mentor, a best friend, and someone he always looked up to and endeavored to emulate. To his grandkids, he wasn't just an awesome Papa. He was their partner in crime and their biggest cheerleader.
Ron, your joyous spirit and positive outlook on life will continue to shine your light on everyone that was graced enough to have their paths cross with yours. You are loved beyond measure, and missed more than any words could ever express.
