Obituary

Rose Gomillion Whaley, age 85, of Greenwood, widow of Billy Wayne "Bill" Whaley, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.

A lifelong educator and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Rose earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Lander University and later received her Master of Science in Instructional and Guidance Services from Clemson University. Her entire teaching career was dedicated to the students of Merrywood Elementary School, where she began in third grade classrooms before transitioning into instructional specialist and guidance. Known affectionately by students as their favorite teacher, Rose brought energy, creativity, and a true love of learning to her classroom - especially when it came to helping students conquer multiplication tables. Her passion for education was passed down to both her children and two of her grandchildren.

Outside the classroom, Rose led a full and joyful life. She had a gift for gardening, and her vibrant flower beds were a source of pride and beauty. Her husband was not the only athlete in the family - as an avid tennis player, she claimed several state titles over the years. Alongside her family and friends, she enjoyed countless vacations to the beaches of Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island, and Hilton Head Island. Her adventurous spirit took her on cruises and trips throughout Europe, the New England states, and California to visit her beloved brothers.

A woman of faith, Rose was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood, the Mauldin Sunday School Class, and the Alma Johnson Circle. She was also a previous member of the Greenwood Woman's Club, a life member of the Danse de Noel Assembly, and various bridge and card clubs. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed her evening ritual of a well-earned glass of wine!

She is survived by a son, Michael Whaley (Terri) of Anderson; a daughter, Susan Kinney of Greenwood; grandchildren, Lauren Greer (Jonathan) of Hodges, Ryan Boggs (Mason) of Greenwood, Taylor Bottini (Bailey) of Greenville, and Jackson Whaley of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Greer, Maci Greer, and Weston Whaley Boggs; and caregiver, Beth Evans.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, Rose was preceded in death by her son-in-law, William Kinney; her grandson, Kyle Whaley; and her brothers, Teddy Gomillion and Robert Gomillion.

A graveside service will be held at Oakbrook Memorial Park on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 3:00 PM, with Rev. John Uldrick officiating.

A reception will be held following the service at Oakbrook Memorial Park Family Center.
