Obituary

Samuel K. Zittrouer Sr., 90, husband of Gene B. Zittrouer, passed away on October 9, 2025 at Hospice House.

Born in Orlando, FL, Sam was a son of the late Lance G. and Vera Knight Zittrouer. He lived a life rich with purpose, joy, and service to others, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A proud 1957 graduate of The Citadel, Sam subsequently dedicated 35 years to a successful career in management within the communications industry at AT&T in Atlanta (formerly Southern Bell and Bell South). His commitment to excellence extended beyond his professional life; he served honorably in the United States Army and was deeply involved in his community. Sam's heart was especially attuned to service, as evidenced by his volunteer work with the Civitan Club in Miami and mission efforts in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina.

In his retirement, Sam cherished life on Lake Greenwood, where he found great joy in boating, fishing, and hosting Fourth of July gatherings. Family was at the center of his universe, and he delighted in sharing laughter and love during family barbecues, where his specialty of baby back ribs would steal the show. He was an avid golfer, competing fiercely in many senior golf championships at local courses, and remained passionate about fishing both at the lake and along the coast. His kindness and warmth shone through his membership at St. Mark United Methodist Church and the Charles Poore Sunday School Class, where he forged lasting connections with fellow congregants.

Sam is survived by his wife, Gene; his daughter, Laura Dreibelbis (Daniel); his son, Samuel K. Zittrouer, Jr. (Donna); four cherished grandchildren, Ryan Daniel Dreibelbis, Gregory Samuel Dreibelbis, Andrew Cordell Zittrouer, and Caroline Louise Zittrouer; loving cousins, Glen and Lindsay Savelle and a special family friend, Marian Nee.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his sisters, Nanette Marks and Lancine White.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on November 15, 2025 in Asbury Hall at Wesley Commons.
