Obituary

Shirley Jean Bliss, 89, of Greenwood, widow of Richard Pitt Bliss passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Bertha Gorham Monroe. Shirley was a former secretary for Fort Belvoir Army Base in Virginia before she became a homemaker. She enjoyed boating, fishing, eating crabs, playing slot machines and traveling. She was known to everyone as "Go-Go Shirley" because she was always on the go. She loved her entire family, friends and neighbors so much. She enjoyed all holidays and gatherings spending time with everyone. Shirley was a member of Pohick Episcopal Church in Lorton, Virginia where she was very involved with the ladies auxiliary and alter guild.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard "Rick" Pitt Bliss, II; a granddaughter, Jean Marie; and siblings: Edward Monroe, Lewis Monroe, George Monroe, Willie Monroe, Clarence Monroe, Edna Pettit, Marie Swartz and Dorothy "Dots" Rollins.

Surviving are her daughters, Cindy Cox (Robert), Ginny Wagner (Mark); a brother, A. L. Mike Monroe; grandchildren, Jessica Nelle, Christy June, Dustin Larkin-Bliss, Bliss Nicole (Nick) and Mark Alan, Jr.; great grandchildren, Destiny Mirah, Tyson Clay, Jadah Marie, Lillee Rose, Fenton Ray, Cali Chañlle, Andrew Richard and Marah Jo,; great-great grandson, Mylo Amir; godson, John L. Monroe; multiple nieces and nephews; and several extended friends and family very special to her.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pohick Episcopal Church in Virginia.
