Sophie Mae Cockrell McDowell, 91, of Sherard Avenue, Ninety Six, widow of Bernard M. McDowell, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at her home.

Born in Saluda, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Willie Mae Leopard Cockrell. Sophie retired from Greenwood Mills-Ninety Six Plant and attended Faith Temple Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joel McDowell; a sister, Christine Mathews; and a brother, O'Neal Cockrell.

Surviving are her sons, Brooks McDowell (Margaret), of Ninety Six and Sammy McDowell (Vickie) of Greenwood; a brother, Tom Cockrell; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday at Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnnie Waller and Rev. Louie Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her great grandsons.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service from 12:30-2 PM.

The family will be at the home, 122 Sherard Avenue, Ninety Six.
