Steve Thomas Gunter "Dad", 76, of Greenwood, husband of Patricia Barnes Gunter, passed away Friday, March 14, 2025 at his home.
Born on December 22, 1948, in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Henry Grady Gunter and Katie Ruth Hancock Gunter. Steve dedicated his life to his family, work, and community.
He received certifications in welding, graphic design, and blueprint reading from Piedmont Technical College. His career spanned over thirty years as a supervisor for the Greenwood Commissioner of Public Works (CPW), where his hard work, intelligence, and exceptional problem-solving skills earned him the admiration of colleagues and the respect of the community. He also worked at Wilson Brothers Sand Co, showcasing his versatility as a true jack of all trades who could truly fix anything.
Beyond his professional life, Steve's greatest joy came from his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life, never missing a ball game and proudly cheering them on from the sidelines. Known affectionately as "Dad" to many, including his work family, Steve was always the first to lend a helping hand, willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
Steve had a passion for gardening and watching Western films. He also took great joy in racing go-karts with both his sons, creating cherished memories that will be remembered forever.
A devoted member of Callie Self Memorial Baptist Church, Steve's faith was evident in his gentle spirit and commitment to serving the Lord. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by his son, Danny Gunter (Kendall); daughter-in-law, Donna Gunter; brother-in-law, Harold Buchanan; grandchildren, Wells Gunter, Emerson Gunter, Ryan Gunter, DaLeigh Gunter, Dylan Davis (Brandi), and Jason Able; great grandchildren, Ellie Davis and Walker Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, William Anthony "Tony" Gunter and sister, Joyce Buchanan.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Ventrello and Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be William Fleming, Jay Brooks, Tim Mullenix, Johnny Eustace, Allen Fortner, and Brad Bell.
Honorary escort will be CPW employees, David Butler, Wayne Wilson, and his nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
