Obituary

Susan Bowers Sims, 64, of Greenwood, died Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at MUSC in Charleston.

Born on January 11, 1961, in Easley, to Inez Nalley Cronic and the late Elbert Elford Bowers, Susan lived a life filled with compassion, love, and dedication to her family and community.

Susan was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Lander University. She was the owner and operator of SBS Trucking and Sims Concrete, leaving a lasting mark on those she worked with and inspiring many with her work ethic and integrity. Her commitment to her profession led her to become a valued member of the NRMCA and CRMCA.

Susan's heart was as big as her accomplishments. A member of First Baptist Church, her faith guided her and instilled in her a deep desire to give back to others. She was known for her generous spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a supportive word, making friends wherever she went.

Susan had an abiding love for music that transcended genres, but it was live music that brought her the most joy. Her love for traveling took her on many adventures and enriching experiences. She enjoyed all types of sports with tennis and South Carolina football being her favorites. Saturdays were sacred for her, where the excitement of Gamecock football filled her weekends, tailgating at the Carolina Walk with her crew. She also enjoyed traveling to many professional tennis tournaments including Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Family Circle. In memory of her husband, Rudy, Susan was instrumental in the organization of the Martin-Sims Golf Classic Tournament which was held annually to benefit golf scholarships at Lander University.

Her deep love for family and friends painted the tapestry of her life, showing us all what it means to prioritize those we hold dear. She found endless joy in her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Susan's departure is a profound loss, but we rejoice in celebrating her life and the countless memories she gifted to everyone she knew. As we remember Susan, let us carry forth her passion for life, her kindness, and the spirit of giving that defined her.

Susan is survived by her longtime companion, Dwight Funderburk; mother, Inez Cronic (Sammy Gunnels); her children, Brittany Sims Dunlap (Terence) and Brooks Sims; grandchildren, Rudy Mac Dunlap and Calhoun Dunlap; longtime nanny to Brittany and Brooks, Teresa Owens, who was more than just a caregiver, she was a cherished member of the family and dear friend; Dwight's children, Chip Funderburk (Katie), Shay Twiggs (Sammy), Wes Funderburk (Ashley) and Dwight's grandchildren, Mary Wynn, Evans, Hattie, Lainey, Mabrey and Madison; her brother, Stanley Bowers (Pam); her stepmother, Bobbie Bowers; and stepsisters, Donna McNeely and Cheryl Simmons (Benjy).
