Thomas Russell Black, Sr., 89, of 516 Trestle Road, husband of Ruby Shannon Black, died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Hospice House. Born in York, SC, he was the son of the late Joseph Arail Black and Mary Wood Black. Thomas was a U. S. Navy Commander Pilot in the South Pacific during WWII. He retired from Greenwood Mills and was former member of Frazier Presbyterian Church and former Mason. Thomas loved dancing and traveling and will be greatly missed by all of those that knew him. He was twice married, first to the late Martha Black and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Thomas was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Ferquron and Kathy Jordan. Surviving in addition to his loving wife that he adored for 16 years of the home are a daughter, Jan (Richard) Nonney of Roanve Rapids, NC; a son, Thomas Russell (Ann) Black, Jr. of Greenwood; a step daughter, Jerri (Tony) Richey of Greenwood; a step son, Keith (Sissi) Shannon of Irmo; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Special thanks to his stepdaughter, Jerri for the care she has given for over seven years of his declining health. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorials may be made to Hospice House, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646. The family is at the home.
