Velma Owen Smith Owen, 101, of the Greenwood area most all of her life, passed away on Monday, September 09, 2013 at NHC of Greenwood. Born in Central, she was the daughter of the late William Franklin Owen and Josiephene Gilstrap Owen. Mrs. Owen, a graduate of Wesleyan Junior College and Lander College, was a teacher at Coronaca Elementary School and Leslie Elementary School for over 30 years. She was a member of the Lander Club, Ninety Six Music Lover�s Club, Greenwood Women�s Club and the Organ Guild of Greenwood. Mrs. Owen taught private music lessons for many years and was a church musician for over 60 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood. She was twice married, first to the late William Curtis Smith for twenty-one years and then to the late Rev. Fred C. Owen for twelve years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two daughters, Dolores von Rosen (Otto) and Betty Jo Scurry, both of Chappells; a sister-in-law, Ruth Owen of Central; four grandchildren, Dale Scurry Barwick (Tony) of Sumter, Jo Scurry, Ann Scurry Ward (Brian) both of Chappells, and Viveka von Rosen of Loveland, CO, six great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Honorary escorts will be her great-grandchildren, Jordan A. McDonald (Jason), Scurry Elrod, Will Barwick, Leah Barwick, Jacob Arnsmeyer and Joanna Arnsmeyer. The family is at their respective homes.
