Obituary

Vera Smith Arnold, 83, of 1213 E. Durst Avenue, widow of Joseph A. Arnold, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at her home. Born in Twin City, GA, she was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Josie Boatwright Smith. During World War II, she worked as welder on the Liberty Ships at the shipyards in Savannah. For the rest of her life, she was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Arnold was a member of Southside Church of Christ. Surviving is her daughter, Louise Arnold Riser of Belton; two sons, Jerry L. Arnold and his wife, Lisa Dodgen Arnold, and John S. Arnold and his wife, Cathy Doolittle Arnold, all of Greenwood; a brother, B. V. Smith of Savannah, GA; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Claude Byrd and Mr. Jessie Smith officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Freddy Fuller, Brandon Knight, Jason Bagwell, Tommy Griffin, Steve Williamson and Roy Williamson. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family is at the home. It is respectfully requested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.
