Vincent DePaul Zanetti, 88, of 1110 Marshall Road, husband of Phyllis Many Zanetti, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Self Regional Medical Center, with his wife at his side. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Louis and Lucille Schick Zanetti. Vin began his education at Rutgers University which was interrupted with the outbreak of World War II. He enlisted in the U. S. Naval Air Corps as he had been participating in a government sponsored flight training program while at school. After graduating from the Pensacola Naval Air Station flight training program he saw action in the South Pacific serving aboard the aircraft carrier U. S. S. Essex as a dive bomber pilot. A participant in this theater of war - from the Philippine Islands, Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima and the battles of the Philippine Sea- he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals. With the end of the war, he returned to civilian life, married, started a family and finished school at Rutgers. Vin raised a family of four in upstate New York where he served the community as a Town Justice, a member of the local school board for 18 years, and a member of the United Methodist Church Board. Employed in the financial field, he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the United National Bank, President of the Sullivan County Bankers Association, and Secretary of the New York State Bankers Association. After the bank merged with Fleet Financial, a northeastern regional banking institution, Vin was employed as a consultant by the bank until he retired to Rose Hill Plantation in Bluffton, SC in 1988. In addition to many activities at Rose Hill, Vin served twelve years with the local Meals on Wheels program. He was a dedicated golfer, active with the Beaufort County Chapter of Grasshopper Golf Group and was very involved in establishing a new United Methodist Church in the Church of the Palms area of Bluffton. He moved to Greenwood in 2008 and was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. Vin and Phyl celebrated 62 years together. They have two daughters, Diane Zanetti of PA, and Randi Pfeiffer and her husband Jeff of CO; two sons Wayne Zanetti and his wife Mary of NY, and Keith Zanetti and his wife Pam of NY. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren: Stephanie Johnson, Kara Johnson, Miranda Johnson, Veronica Zanetti, Jodi Zanetti, Amy Hicks, Tara Poje, Brian Pfeiffer, Kimberly Pfeiffer and Sarah Pfeiffer; four great grandchildren: Ian Schory, Cecelia Poje, Anthony Hicks and Kane Poje. He is also survived by his sister Valerie Moxley of FL, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Jay Zanetti. In honor of Vin and Phyl meeting at a dance sponsored by the Daniel Pierce Library in Grahamsville, NY 12740, the family requests that donations be sent to the Library in lieu of flowers.
