Obituary

Walter James Smith, 88, formerly of Johns Creek Road in Hodges, widower of Dora Taylor Smith, died, Friday, September 1, 2017 at Abbeville Nursing Home.

Born in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Lewis Walter Smith and Lizzie Jane Weeks Smith. Walter was a U. S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War as a Sargent with the 25th Division 27th Regiment. He retired from Greenwood Mills - Chalmers Plant, attended Northside Holiness Church and was a member of the Sunshine Band.

He was preceded in death by two children and nine siblings.

Surviving are two children, Tommie Lewis Smith of Greenwood and Shirley Smith Leopard of Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 pm on Sunday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dee Gorman officiating.

The family will receive friends at Harley Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 to 8 pm.

Memorials may be sent to a charity of one's choice.
