William Ervin Fisher, Sr. 89, of 157 Highland Drive, Greenwood, formally of Blacksburg, SC, husband of Ruth Campbell Fisher passed away on March 30, 2016 at Hospice House.
Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Julian Monroe Fisher and Elizabeth McCall Fisher. Mr. Fisher graduated from WLT High School in Wellford in 1943. He served in the US Marine Corp during WWII where he won battle ribbons for the Battles of the Philippine Sea and Iwo Jima. After WWII he graduated from Wofford College in 1949. William was a coach and teacher at Blacksburg High School from 1949 to 1963. In 1960 his Blacksburg football team had an undefeated regular season. He left teaching and retired from Monsanto after twenty years of service. Following his retirement, he returned to teaching at Emerald High School and retired the second time in 1992. Mr. Fisher was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Blacksburg.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are sons, William Fisher, Jr., of Greenwood, David Fisher of Spartanburg and Bryan Fisher and wife Mari, of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Beth Moss and husband Ray of Greenwood; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Friday at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.
