William H. "Dick" Harter, Jr., 92, of 421 North Church Street, widower of Doris Fowler Harter, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Ninety Six, he was the son of the late William Henry Harter, Sr. and Sallie Ellenburg Harter. Dick was a commissioner for Ninety Six CPW since 1962, a charter member of Eureka Lodge and a Mason. He retired from Maxwell Brothers Furniture and was the owner of North Cambridge Grocery. Mr. Harter was a faithful member of Cambridge United Methodist Church where a photo hangs of the founding members taken in the late 1920's and he is being held as a young child. He served his church as treasurer for many years, was a trustee and a member of the choir. He was also a member of the Granny Davis Sunday school class, and was enthusiastic about the building fund and his work in the capacity.
Surviving are a son, William H "Rick" Harter, III; a granddaughter, Haylee Harter and her fiancé, Matthew Perry; and a great grandson, Ashton Perry, all of Greenwood.
Services will be held at 3 pm on Friday at Cambridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Smyth officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Wade Harter, Mickey Goodman, Ronald Lowery, Gene Williams, J. C. Smoot, Jay Reynolds, Rip Tafta and William Hawkins.
Honorary escort will be Mary Ann Goodman, Tasha Colson along with the Ninety Six CPW employees and past commissioners.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 1 to 3 pm.
