Wilma Sayler Winik, 90, wife of Irvin M. Winik, died Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Wesley Commons Healthcare Center.
Born in Hebron, ND, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Clara Jose Sayler.
Raised on a farm, she was shaped by the values of hard work and perseverance and began her education in a one-room schoolhouse. Wilma later attended Yankton College and earned her master's degree in vocational Rehabilitation from what is now Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Following her graduation, she moved to Baltimore, where she began a fulfilling career with the Social Security Administration. It was there that she met her loving husband of 60 years, and the two shared a beautiful journey in life, retiring together in 1994.
Wilma and Irv enjoyed their retirement in the scenic community of Keowee Key in South Carolina before relocating to Wesley Commons in Greenwood, SC, in 2013, where they spent the past years creating new memories. Throughout her career as a Disability Claims Examiner, Wilma dedicated herself to advocating for those in need, ultimately finding herself in a role where she specialized in reading and writing disability policy.
She is survived by her husband; several nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends, Eunice Sebastian, and Pat and Diane Myers.
Wilma was preceded in death by her sister, Rev. Alma Stepanek, who was the first female ordained pastor in German congregationalism, and her brothers-in-law, Rev. Harold Stepanek, Irvin Keyser and Melvin Winik; and sisters-in-law, Edna Winik and Mildred Keyser.
No services are planned.
